Finding the Right Bathroom Remodeling Contractor

Finding the Right Bathroom Remodeling Contractor
Monday, October 22, 2018

A bathroom remodel seems like it would be a small project. It’s a small room, so unlike a kitchen remodel or a whole-home remodel, it should run smoother, right? In theory, yes, but in practice, there could be some bumps — or even potholes — in the road if you don’t choose the right bathroom remodeling contractor. ArDan Construction won’t just tell you we’re the right contractor for a bathroom remodel in the Phoenix area. We’ll show you, and let you know what you need to do to confirm it.

Know Your Project

The first step is one of the most important. The more you know about what you want for your bathroom remodeling project, the more detailed you can be in your questions. That’s especially true if you’ll be expanding the bathroom, or making significant changes to the layout (switching out a tub for a walk-in shower, or redesigning with accessibility in mind, for instance). You don’t need to know every last detail — a good contractor knows the steps in a remodeling project, can identify any gaps you’ve left and help you fill them in — but the more you know going into the process, the better we’ll be able to help.

Just the same as you shouldn’t simply choose the first contractor you find, a list that’s too long leads to paralysis by analysis. Narrow your list to a top three, and call each in for an interview. We’ll get into some of the specifics you should be looking for in a moment, but broadly speaking you’re looking for a few things during the interview.

  • Quality of work
  • Qualifications for the job
  • Communication
  • Honesty
  • Commitment to follow through

Familiarize Yourself With Requirements

There’s much more to your project than what we’re doing on-site. You should be sure that your contractor is properly licensed and insured. You should ask about their credentials and memberships, as well as their past experience. Finally, because there are permits to secure and inspections necessary at each step in the process, your contractor should be well-versed in those and not cut corners; failing to get the proper permits can cause problems should you decide to sell your home further down the line.

Check Portfolio

A good contractor should be proud to show off their work. Ask to see what they’ve done. They should have a portfolio of remodeling projects, and should be able to give you details on those projects, including the challenges they encountered, the ideas they contributed, and their approach to what they do. Fair warning: we’ll probably talk your ear off at this juncture.

Check References

Just as they take pride in their work, the best remodeling contractors leave a trail of satisfied customers behind. Ask to speak to some of their past clients and see what they have to say about the quality of the contractor’s work. Ideally, you’ll want to talk to some of their older clients in addition to more recent ones; this gives you a better idea of how the work holds up over time.

Read the Fine Print

Any reputable contractor will spell out the details in writing. That includes the scope of work to be done, how change orders will be handled where applicable, payment schedules, warranties on parts and labor, work schedules, approvals, cleanup, and final walk-throughs. Read and understand the contract in full before signing, asking questions whenever and wherever you’re not sure.

Knowing the right questions to ask and the right way to evaluate a bathroom remodeling contractor will save you time and money, and could go a long way toward preserving your sanity.
