How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?

How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?
Monday, November 12, 2018

You’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen? Congratulations. You probably already have visions of granite countertops and six-burner stoves dancing in your head, and can’t wait to cook your first meal for friends and family in a spiffy new kitchen. But wait you must, since a kitchen remodel isn’t something that takes shape overnight. How long is that wait? The whole process takes longer than you may realize, but a bit of advance planning and a call to ArDan Remodeling can ensure it all runs smoothly.

Step One: Plan Ahead

One of the most vital steps to ensuring a pain-free kitchen remodel is one we see homeowners skimp on time and time again. Don’t make the same mistake-plan ahead, since that planning lays the groundwork for all that follows. Determine your budget, narrow down your list of essentials, should-haves, and could-live-withouts. This can take months, or as little as a few days; the only right answer is that however long it takes you, it should be as thorough as possible.

Step Two: Choose Your Kitchen Remodeling Contractor

This is another step that should not be rushed, and that takes a few weeks when done correctly. We’ve written elsewhere about choosing a kitchen remodeling contractor and won’t belabor the point here. Suffice it to say, you’ll want to choose someone with the knowledge and experience to understand your needs, anticipate potential problems, and execute flawlessly. Don’t just choose the first, or cheapest, handyman that comes up in your Google search for Phoenix kitchen remodeling!

Step Three: Begin the Design Phase

If your planning process was thorough, you probably have a clear idea of what you want to do with your kitchen. Some remodels are as simple as installing new floors, cabinets and appliances, and applying new paint. Others may involve tearing down walls for an open floor plan, installing new windows and skylights, or other more extensive work. Speaking to a kitchen design consultant will do three things:

  • Ensure the desired look is feasible
  • Identify potential problems and cost overruns
  • Choose materials, fixtures, and appliances while also determining the time for special orders

Step Four: Finalize Plans

Once you’ve received a written estimate, you may realize that some of your choices will put you over budget — or, conversely, you may realize you have money left over, and new ideas for its use. Some components may take longer than others to arrive, and we’ll also want to build in a bit of extra time in case a vendor ships the wrong item or something arrives damaged. We’ll also be reaching out to any applicable subcontractors to ensure their availability lines up with your job. All of this should take place before demolition starts.

Step Five: Commence Work

By now, you’re probably anxious to get started (as are we). Waiting to have all the pieces in place minimizes delays, however, so the added time will have been worthwhile. If you’re keeping the existing structure, demolition takes place quickly. If you’re adding on to your home or making significant changes, that’s going to take longer. We do our best to be efficient, but we’re also balancing your desire for speed against our insistence on quality. Here’s what a rough timeline looks like:

  • Demolition
  • Structural changes (where applicable)
  • Utility installation
  • Painting
  • Flooring installation
  • Cabinetry
  • Countertop measurement
  • Appliance and lighting installation
  • Countertop fabrication and installation
  • Remaining appliance and fixture installation
  • Remaining carpentry and cleanup

The whole process takes about six months from start to finish, with some variations. Each project is different, of course, and we’ll be giving you a firmer timeline based on the precise parameters of your project.

With that being said, if you don’t take sufficient care in the early stages, it can take much longer. That’s why we encourage you to put in plenty of thought — and to rely on our help as much as you need to — early on, in order to ensure that we can keep your remodeling project on time and on budget.
